MAN CRUSHED TO DEATH

A construction worker was yesterday crushed to death and three others injured when an embankment under which they were digging a foundation for an apartment complex collapsed on Donhead Avenue in Liguanea, St Andrew.

The dead man was unidentified, while the injured were named as George Guthrie, Alton East and Sheldon Edwards.
According to Anthony Skerritt, one of the construction workers, the incident occurred shortly after noon while the men were digging the foundation for an apartment complex.

"Me just done clear away my part and a move when all of a sudden me just hear a big tumbling sound and the whole banking just come down and cover all of them," Skerritt said.

It took almost an hour before firefighters and other construction workers could locate the men who were trapped beneath tons of rocks and dirt.

Skerritt said the dead man's head was bashed by a huge boulder, while both legs of one of the other men were broken. The injuries sustained by the other two men were not clear.

"Is a clay rock drop on the man head, hard hat fly off and everything. When we look on him you could see that inside of his head mash up cause him even a bleed through him nose," Skerritt told Observer.

The tragedy forced an early end to work on the site as traumatised construction workers sat with horrified expressions etched on their faces.

Although many of the workers said additional safety precautions could have prevented the incident, many of them were eager to get back on the job.

"Honestly, it could have happened to anyone, a just one of the dangers of the job. The boss just need to spend some money and take care of those men and we just continue the work," one worker was overheard saying, to nods of agreement from his co-workers.
